Car Seat Test

The car seat test which is also known as a car seat challenge is a recommended procedure for children born before 37 weeks gestation.  The goal of the test is to see if premature babies can safely be put in a car seat without any risk of oxygen desaturation, episodes of cessation of breathing also called apnea as well as episodes where her heart rate declines also called bradycardia.
The test typically involves monitoring the child’s oxygen levels, breathing patterns as well as heart rate for 2 hours while the child is placed in a car seat.
Although the car seat test and itself does not entirely confirmed that the child can safely be placed in a car seat, failing the test dose suggest that the child should not be placed in a car seat but would be better served by being placed in a car bed.
