Adult home sleep testing is the modality of choice for the initial evaluation of adult patients with a strong suspicion of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. This modality can be used in patients who are in fairly good health and have a very strong history suggestive of obstructive sleep apnea. This modality should not be used in patients with severe hypertension, significant cardiac disease as well as significant neurologic and neuromuscular disease.

A negative or failed home sleep study in a situation where there is a very high index of suspicion for obstructive sleep apnea may result in the patient having to complete an attended sleep polysomnogram.
